FUO Mass Communication Holds Advertising Pitch-a-ton; Awards Winners with Cash Prizes

The Department of Mass Communication, Fountain University Osogbo (FUO) organized an advertising pitch for the 200 level and 300level students of the department. The event which was held on Monday 6th September 2021 at Eti-Osa Lecture Threatre of the University was organized in order to improve the creative prowess of the students and prepare them as professionals upon graduation. The creativity event coincided with the 3-Day Professional Media Skill Workshop organized by the department.

The students were tasked with creating integrated marketing communication ideas and strategies for two small-scale businesses in Osun State – 1st Premier Custard and Adunni Exotic Fruits. The event involved students showcasing their creative ideas in the presence of media and business experts like Mr. Ibrahim Adebayo,Business Development Manager at Plantation Foods), a Digital Marketing and Research expert, Mr. Mutiu Iyanda, Co-Founder Infoprations Limited; Mr. Kareem Olaide, Head of Operations, Plantation Foods who served as panelists for the pitch-a-ton. The challenge which aimed at encouraging a healthy competition among students, had participants formed into different agencies slugging it out in executing productions across platforms including Print, Radio, TV and Billboard Advertisement.

Apart from the event serving as a continuous assessment test for the students, winners were awarded cash prizes by the stakeholders of the SMEs. The lecturers from the Department of Mass Communication and the panelists passed constructive feedback to the contestants of the pitch and applauded their creative works. While the Business Manager of Plantation Foods, Mr. Ibrahim Adebayo was intrigued by the creative work of the students, he stated that he will key into the creative ideas of the students while handling the business development of 1st Premier Custard. Also, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Adunni Exotic Fruits, Miss Adewunmi Anuoluwapo was moved to give testimonies of the birth of her small scale fruit business and didn’t fail to mention how Fountain University, Osogbo especially the Department of Mass Communication has been a critical part of her business growth. She urged the students to attach importance to the course work of advertising and pay keen attention to the practical work given as assignments to the students.

In his own remarks, the Head of Department, Mr K.A Salaudeen outlined the importance of taking cognizance of the practical work and the teachings in the department in general. He explained  the lucrative nature of Mass Communication and how impactful it is.  He further stated that students of the department should take note of important takeaways from the speakers in the subsequent Professional Media Workshop that is scheduled to take place later in the day. The lecturers of the department were also present for the pitch-a-ton and during the closing remark by one of them, Mr. Rasheed Adebiyi, he said he was glad the students could push through the event despite the challenges they were faced with during the course of bringing their ideas to life. He also commended the resilience and hardwork of the student-event planners who planned the Advertising Pitch as this also serves as a practical course work for Assessment for the students. He encouraged the students never to give up and keep on looking for opportunities to showcase and improve their skills. The event was witnessed by lecturers of the department including Mr. Sanni Azeez, Mr. Raheem Akintunde, Mr. Akeem Azeez Ademola and other invited lecturers from other departments and units in the university.

At the end of the presentation, Prudential Media Holding was the overall winner of the pitch followed by Synergy 6 Agency and Pyramid Agency respectively. At the 200 level,  the pitch was won by Brainstorm  Agency trailed closely by Creative Minds and  Apex Advert Agencies in that order.
