Christy Oni is a prolific writer, pharmacist and a development worker. She recently launches a book focusing on health professionals and the available opportunities in the global health space. She shares her thoughts with AC on the new book and her career journey.
AC: Could we please meet you?
Christy Oni: My name is Pharmacist Christy Oni. I am a Bachelor of Pharmacy graduate from the University of Ibadan. I have a certification in Leadership and Management in Health from the University of Washington. I graduated from the Founder Institute, the world’s largest pre-seed startup accelerator and also graduated from Future Females Business School in conjunction with UK-NigTechHub in 2021.
I am a Social Innovator Program Fellow at LEAP AFRICA and the co-founder of NatalPro Ltd, a health startup focused on improving women’s health in Africa. My interest cuts across health, technology, entrepreneurship and capacity development. And one of my dreams is to help students and graduates achieve their full potentials and to help them gain clarity in their career path. I am the author of The Journey After Pharmacy School and The Global Health Professional.
AC: You were recently celebrated on LinkedIn for launching a book. Could you tell us what motivated you?
Christy Oni: I recently launched The Global Health Professional book, a compilation of interviews of global health leaders across international organizations like W.H.O, UNICEF, USAID, Chemonics International, etc. who have shared their career stories, to empower students and graduates to strategically ascend the ladder of career success. What motivated me is the burning desire to help people succeed in their chosen career path. I have interacted with quite a number of healthcare professionals who are interested in practicing in the global or public health space but to be honest, getting into these international organizations can be very challenging especially for recent graduates with little or no previous experience. I know as a Pharmacist, for example, there is more to what we can do beyond the regular practice. In order for me to help people achieve their dream job in their desired organizations, I know I can’t do it alone. Of course, I do not have any experience in this field, so I had to reach out to outstanding professionals in this field. In the words of Isaac Newton “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”. Standing on the shoulders of giants is a necessary part of creativity, innovation, and development. And that is how I birthed The Global Health Professional; simply by standing on the shoulders of giants to help people achieve their dream jobs.
AC: Who are those the book meant for?
Christy Oni: This book is for all healthcare professionals interested in practicing in the public or global health space. Those interested in working with International organizations and non-governmental organizations like WHO, UNICEF, USAID, United Nations, etc. as a Medical doctor, Pharmacist, Nurse, Nutritionist, or any health professional should grab a copy of this book.
AC: What are the major take-aways?
Christy Oni: To be honest, the book is so rich in content and there are several take-aways in the book. You will learn the various career opportunities available for healthcare professionals in the global or public health space, the practical steps on how you can get started including sites to get specific job opportunities and how you can position yourself for such opportunities. For recent graduates with no experience or even additional degree, you will learn the secrets to getting your desired job with ease.
AC: How soon are we expecting another book from you?
Christy Oni: It could be soon and it could be farther. That’s because I’m focused on solving people’s pain point and there’s a whole lot that goes into launching a book. Even after getting a challenge or problem to solve, it could take about six to twelve months before the book can be released. Just watch out for the next book to be released, because one thing is constant – It’s full of values!
AC: What is your advice for the youth seeking clarity and self-development?
Christy Oni: Many of us are so anxious about tomorrow when we have not even lived today to the fullest . Just take it easy, keep developing yourself and I’m sure clarity and directions will definitely come as you make progress. Like driving a car at night with your headlights on, sometimes clarity comes as you make progress. You do not see the entire road but as you follow the light, one yard after the other, the road becomes clearer and clearer. And that’s why it’s important to follow whatever light you have now and take it one day at a time.
Self-development is really important if you desire to grow. Learn as much as you can and keep striving to be a better version of yourself. There is a whole lot you can be if you do not give up. I pray you receive clarity and directions regarding your purpose in life.
AC: Thank you for your time
Christy Oni: My pleasure.
